About this Dataset
This dataset links patent filings from the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) and the European Patent Office (EPO) to company entities identified via Crunchbase and the German commercial register (Handelsregister). It enables researchers to study innovation at the firm level — matching IP assets to corporate structures, ownership hierarchies, and company fundamentals.
The dataset includes inventor networks (co-inventor relationships), assignee hierarchies (parent-subsidiary links), IPC technology class codes, and match confidence scores. All records are cleaned, deduplicated, and provided with methodology documentation for academic citation.

Methodology & Sources
Patent records are sourced directly from DPMA’s DPINFO database and EPO’s Open Patent Services (OPS) API. Company matching is performed using a combination of name normalization, address matching, and Crunchbase entity IDs, verified against German commercial register data where available. Match confidence scores reflect the quality of each link (0.85+ is a high-confidence match).
Full methodology documentation, including the matching algorithm description and data lineage, is included with every purchase and can be cited in academic publications.
